Week 1 Players of the Week: Efficiency, Explosiveness, and Defensive Dominance

ICAA Week 1 Players of the Week: Efficiency, Explosiveness, and Defensive Dominance

The Independent Collegiate Athletic Association kicked off its 2025 season with fireworks across the field, and three athletes rose above the rest to set the tone for the year. From precision passing to punishing ground yards to game-changing defensive plays, the Week 1 Players of the Week embody the spirit of ICAA football: disciplined execution and impact performance.

Offensive Player of the Week – Quarterback

Wyatt Lagow, Jacksonville Athletic Academy

In his first start of the season, Jacksonville Athletic Academy’s Wyatt Lagow showed exactly what it means to be a field general. The sophomore quarterback delivered a clinic in efficiency, completing 9 of 11 passes (81%) for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

What made Lagow’s performance stand out wasn’t just the stat line — it was the way he managed the game. With zero turnovers, he kept the Mocs’ offense moving smoothly and consistently put his team in scoring position. In a league where early-season mistakes can change outcomes, Lagow’s poise set the tone for JAA’s offensive success.

“Wyatt didn’t just throw the ball well,” said one ICAA coach. “He controlled the pace, read the defense, and made sure every possession mattered. That’s winning football.”

Offensive Player of the Week – Running Back

Jordan Moultrie

If Lagow was about precision, Jordan Moultrie was all about power and explosion. The running back turned in one of the most dominant rushing displays of Week 1, piling up 166 yards on 15 carries and adding two touchdowns.

That’s an eye-popping 11 yards per carry average — the type of production that breaks games wide open. Defenses simply couldn’t contain Moultrie, who ripped through arm tackles and consistently found daylight at the second level.

“He gave us the big plays we needed,” his coach said. “Every time he touched the ball, there was a chance for six. That’s the mark of a difference-maker.”

Defensive Player of the Week – Defensive Tackle

Robert Hunter

Defense wins championships, and Robert Hunter wasted no time proving why he’ll be a force this season.

The defensive tackle was disruptive from the opening snap, racking up two sacks and three tackles — but it was his hustle play that stole the show.

Late in the game, Hunter scooped up a loose ball and rumbled more than 60 yards on a fumble recovery return, flipping momentum and electrifying the crowd. The play wasn’t just a highlight — it was a statement.

“When you’ve got a defensive tackle who can collapse the pocket and then outrun half the field on a return, that’s a nightmare for opponents,” said one scout in attendance.

Setting the Standard for 2025

Week 1 of the ICAA season delivered the perfect snapshot of what fans can expect this year: sharp quarterback play, explosive athletes in the open field, and defenders capable of changing games in a single snap.

Lagow, Moultrie, and Hunter didn’t just win individual awards — they set the bar for excellence in the weeks to come. If this opening slate was any indication, the ICAA is in for a season filled with highlight-reel performances and championship-level competition.
